SPY Radar Readiness Assessments
On-site readiness assessments of the SPY-1 radar on destroyers and cruisers, each one ending in a documented repair plan and hands-on training for the ship's crew.
Problem
Ships deploy with radar discrepancies the crew cannot always find or fix alone, and an undocumented fault never enters the maintenance plan — so it never gets funded, and it surfaces again at the worst possible time.
Outcome
Each assessment ends with the discrepancies entered in the ship's maintenance project where they can be funded and worked, and with the crew trained on the techniques they need to keep the radar operating while deployed.
Evidence
- Assessed SPY-1 signal processor and transmitter systems against the Navy's maintenance requirement standards.
- Worked with subject matter experts and the ship's crew to plan, identify, assess, document, repair and validate the ship's maintenance project.
- Submitted formal maintenance action forms documenting discrepancies found in auxiliary systems, which is what drives follow-on repair work and funding.
- Conducted hands-on training that taught the ship's crew the maintenance practices to use while deployed.
A readiness assessment is a scoped engagement with a deadline and a customer who has to live with the result. I assess the SPY-1 signal processor and transmitter against the Navy's maintenance requirements, work through what I find with the ship's own technicians and with subject matter experts, and write the discrepancies up so they enter the ship's funded maintenance plan rather than living in someone's notebook. The part that matters most is the last day. The crew keeps operating this equipment for months after I leave, often with no engineer within a thousand miles, so the assessment is only finished when they can do the checks themselves.
