I am the engineer the Navy sends when a destroyer's radar is down. For two years that has meant working on the customer's deck rather than from an office: isolating faults on live transmitter and signal-processing hardware, deploying on short notice to ports in the United States and overseas, and training the crew that has to keep the system running long after I fly home. Every visit runs through people before it runs through parts — enlisted technicians, commanding officers, program managers and contractor reps all have to agree on one repair plan before anything gets fixed. That is the work I am moving into medical device sales to keep doing: technical credibility in a high-pressure room, training as the actual deliverable, and a customer who needs the equipment to work today.
